Box Tops for Education: How the App Works Now

Box Tops for Education now runs entirely through the free Box Tops app. You buy participating General Mills and partner products, then scan your whole receipt in the app within 14 days, or link a Walmart account so purchases there count automatically. The cash goes to the pre-K to 8th grade school you pick, paid twice a year. Your family gets nothing back, which is the honest way to see it: it’s a way to send a school money from groceries you’d buy anyway, not a freebie. The best week of the year to use it is National Box Tops Week, October 12 to 18, 2026, with double earnings.

How Box Tops works in 2026 Verified October 2026

The paper clips are history. General Mills’ About page dates the switch: “2019 Box Tops goes digital! Families can now scan to earn cash for their school.” The app page puts it plainly: “In order to earn cash for your school, you’ll need to use the Box Tops app on your mobile device.”

There are two ways to earn:

  1. Scan your receipt. The official rules require “scanning your full receipt in the App within fourteen (14) days of the date of purchase.” The app “automatically finds Box Tops products on your receipt,” so you don’t need to know which items count. You can scan up to 50 receipts a day.
  2. Connect a Walmart account. “When you connect your Box Tops and Walmart accounts, you can buy participating products at Walmart either in-store or online and earn for your school — no receipt scanning required.” The About page dates Connected Accounts to 2024.

Signing up costs nothing. The rules say “Membership is free and limited to one account per email address, per device.” You have to be 18 or older and a US resident.

What a Box Top is worth

This is the question every parent asks, and the program’s own text doesn’t answer it in one number. The rules describe earnings in cash and set caps, but they don’t print a per-product amount. The About page’s illustration of the classic paper clip is labelled “worth 10 cents,” which is how most people remember it. Treat the amount in your app after each scan as the real figure, because bonus offers change it.

The caps, from the official rules:

  • Per school: “up to, but not more than, $20,000 cash per year,” counted from March 2 to March 1.
  • Per family member: “up to, but not more than, a total of $10,000 cash per year” from product purchases.

Neither cap will matter to an ordinary household. They’re there to stop resellers.

National Box Tops Week: October 12-18, 2026 Verified October 2026

The Box Tops homepage calls it “the biggest earning opportunity of the year”: “From October 12 – October 18, you’ll earn double Box Tops on every participating product, plus 20 Bonus Box Tops for every four participating products you buy.”

If you were planning a cereal or snack restock anyway, this is the week to do it. Don’t buy things you don’t need because of it. Double a small amount is still a small amount, and the money goes to the school, not your budget.

Which schools qualify

Per the official rules, the program is open to schools that teach “one or more grades from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade,” with a regular faculty and curriculum. High schools aren’t eligible.

Homeschool families, take note: the program is also open to “Internal Revenue Service recognized 501(c)(3) home school associations” with “a class of 15 or more students.” A single homeschooling family can’t enroll on its own, but a registered co-op can.

If your school isn’t on the list, the app lets you pick any enrolled school, and there’s a “Find a School in Need” option that sends your earnings to a low-income school instead.

When schools actually get paid

Schools are paid by check, and the rules set two dates: “Payments will be made twice each school year, by December 31st and by April 30th.” The December check covers earnings confirmed from March 2 to November 1, and the April check covers November 2 to March 1. One catch for small schools: those that earn “less than $20.00” in the first period get no December check. Their earnings carry over to April.

So if your school’s coordinator is counting on this fall’s total, purchases scanned after November 1 land in the spring check.

The one part that pays you: the Free Snacks rebate Verified October 2026

Box Tops is running a 30th-anniversary rebate that does come back to your family, but it’s purchase-gated, so it isn’t a freebie. The homepage pitches it as “Buy a Snack, Get Your Money Back.” Per the Free Snacks rules, you must:

  • buy “(1) General Mills Box Tops item and one (1) Eligible Snacks Product in one transaction between 6/1/26 and 11/30/26”;
  • scan the receipt in the app within 14 days, or use a connected retailer account;
  • have a PayPal or Venmo account to receive the money.

It’s “Limit one (1) rebate per person,” and “void in RI, CT, ND, NC, and Miami Dade County.” Allow “up to 4 weeks” to receive it. The text I could load doesn’t state a cap on the rebate amount, so check the eligible-products list before you assume a particular snack is fully covered.

It’s the same mechanic as the rebate apps in my rebate apps explained guide: you pay first and get money back later, through an app that sees your receipt.

Is it worth the app?

If your child’s school runs Box Tops, yes. It takes a few seconds per receipt and costs nothing. Be honest about the trade, though. The app reads your full grocery receipt, which is real shopping data handed to General Mills, and the payoff goes to the school, not to you.

It’s one of a family of brand programs that turn purchases into something, alongside Pampers Club, which pays you in rewards, and Pizza Hut’s BOOK IT! program, which pays kids in pizza for reading. Box Tops is the one where the reward goes to the classroom instead.

FAQ: Box Tops for Education

Can you still clip Box Tops?

No. The program went digital in 2019, and the app page says you “need to use the Box Tops app” to earn. You scan your whole receipt within 14 days of purchase.

How long do I have to scan a receipt?

Fourteen days from the purchase date on the receipt, per the official rules. Walmart purchases made through a connected account count without scanning.

When is National Box Tops Week 2026?

October 12 to 18, 2026. Every participating product earns double Box Tops, plus 20 bonus Box Tops for every four participating products.

Do I get anything for Box Tops?

No. The earnings belong to the school you choose and are paid to it by check twice a year. The only part that pays families is the separate Free Snacks rebate, which needs a purchase and runs through November 30, 2026.
