9 Uses for Rice – Not Just For Eating!

by Carol on May 24, 2013

rice

Did you know that not only is rice yummy and good for you, it also has several awesome uses around the house!

  1. Dry out wet electronics and phones by sticking it in a bag or bowl of rice
  2. Grab some mismatched kids socks and pour rice in them, then sew up the ends. place bowls, cups, etc together on the floor and play bean bag toss! See my how-to HERE
  3. Put some rice and a couple drops of lavender essential oil in a plastic baggie and shake shake shake. Pour into a sock and sew up the ends. Microwavable for sore muscles! If you don’t have a microwave (like me) You can place it in the oven at 200 degrees for about 10 minutes.
  4. Pour about 1/3 cup into your garbage disposal and grind to sharpen the blades.
  5. Pour some into your coffee grinder for easy cleaning and sharpening.
  6. Rice is great for cleaning cylinders like vases, baby bottles, etc. Simply pour some into the container, add a little dish soap and water, and shake & swirl!
  7. Pour rice into a tall water bottle or jar. add trinkets like a marble, a bobby pin, anything small that will fit. Seal the bottle and shake it up. Give to your kids to play I Spy!
  8. Make maracas – grab a paper cup or toilet paper roll, pour about a tablespoon of rice in, and seal the ends by stapling it closed. Make some music by shaking! Same works if you have plastic easter eggs – just tape it closed!
  9. Add a few grains of rice in salt shakers to prevent clumping.

How do YOU use rice in the home?

DIY – Bean Bag Toss Game With Mismatched Socks!

May 22, 2013

You know all of those mismatched kid’s socks you are holding onto? Here’s a great way to use them! My two kids are very into throwing and tossing things – being 3 years old they are learning angles, force, and targeting. I made this fun and super easy game for them and they LOVE it! [...]

DIY: Bow Hanger

January 4, 2013

I’ve seen all these super cute bow hangers on Etsy but never wanted to fork out the money to buy one. When a friend posted a picture of one she had made for her daughter on Facebook (and told me just how easy it was), I thought it was time I try my hand at [...]

DIY: Handprint Reindeer

December 23, 2012

This year, we made a handprint menorah for my in-laws, and I knew I wanted to make a handprint reindeer for my parents. So, this morning, we set Lucy up in the kitchen and went to work. Just like the menorah, this was super easy to make and barely took us five minutes. I’m all [...]

DIY: Makeup Brush Holder

December 22, 2012

I used to keep my makeup brushes in a mug on my sink counter. I wasn’t too fond of it because a mug doesn’t really fit into my decor well, but it worked so I kept it. Then, I saw this idea on Facebook and thought I would give it a try. I like how [...]

DIY: Handprint Menorah

December 14, 2012

I totally wish I could take credit for coming up with the idea for this project, but I didn’t. A woman I interviewed for a story on interfaith families told me her son had made a menorah out of handprints at his preschool, and I thought that was such a cute idea. It was definitely [...]

DIY: Salt Scrub

December 8, 2012

I don’t know about you, but I used to spend a good bit of money buying body scrubs off Etsy. Then, I realized that I could make the same thing myself with items I most likely already had on hand, saving myself a good chunk of money. So, I made myself a salt scrub. I [...]

DIY: Homemade Picture Frame

December 1, 2012

I am a big fan of homemade gifts. I love making gifts for other people (which is much easier now that we have a munchkin!), and I think they appreciate it more than something I just went to the store and bought. I feel like it shows more thought. One year for my grandmother-in-law’s birthday, [...]

DIY: Hair Band Holder

November 24, 2012

I have long-ish hair and I tend to be hot-natured, so I pull my hair up every.single.day. That means, I have hair bands all over my house from where I’ve taken them off or from where Lucy has left them after playing. I don’t really have anywhere to put them, so they are primarily kept [...]

DIY: Key Hanger

November 17, 2012

I love making my own decorations for my house, and when I saw a homemade key hanger, I knew I wanted to make one. We currently have one with a mail holder that we bought for our kitchen, but I thought it would be fun to make one for our living room, should we choose [...]
