Blogging 101 – What Should I Write About?

So you want to blog. Let me tell you firsthand. Not all sunshine and roses and money rolling in. My blog is a product of over 2 years of long hours, working for free, blood, sweat, and tears. It’s allocating the time to build my audience and make my site stand out the way I want it to. Through trial and error I have grown to a comfortable space here on the world wide web.

Many people think that running a blog is easy and you can make money fast without doing much work. This is not the case.

First thing you need to do is ask yourself what you are passionate about. That’s the key to being successful. Is it crafting, cooking, green living? Or maybe it’s just wanting to talk about your daily life. Maybe child-rearing or how much you love your cat. You need to know that if you aren’t writing about what you love and are enjoying doing so you will get burned out fast. You will also be disappointed when your readers don’t respond or you lose them altogether.

Readers can see if there is something in your content you are passionate about. So that’s the very first step. As my grandfather always said “find something you love to do and figure out how to get paid for it”. That’s the key to loving your job.

And that’s exactly what blogging can be  - a FULL time job. Think about how much you do during the day. Do you have a regular 9-5 job? Are you a stay at home mom or dad? Adding blogging on top of that could be daunting. But it could also be very rewarding!

When I started Mommy Wants Freebies I was pregnant with my twins. I was also no stranger to blogging as I had a personal blog all about infertility. That was my passion – to become a mother. I loved sharing my story (read about it here). I loved meeting others online who had the same trials and tribulations I did. I am still very good friends with many of them, most of which are now parents themselves.

When I realized I had to stay home to care for my little ones I knew I had to do something to make ends meet. So I started looking for deals on baby things online. My dear friend Brandi suggested I start a blog to share these great things I was getting for free and Mommy Wants Freebies was born!

I got into couponing and had a glimpse into how effective it could be when I stumbled upon an episode of “Wife Swap”. The two women profiled were opposites of each other – one spent extravagantly and the other couponed. It was a bit of an “a-ha!” moment for me and I knew I had to learn more and share this with my readers. Of course, the frugal wife in that episode was an extreme coupon fanatic, and although I know I will never shop without coupons again, I do know my limits. I do not need 100 deodorant sticks or 500 toothbrushes.

Through starting Mommy Wants Freebies I discovered the world of reviews and giveaways. I thought “wow, these companies send you stuff for FREE? And you just have to say nice things?!” It’s not quite like that (more in on that later), but I was able to be introduced to lots of great products and I feel the twins have benefited from that. From there Mommy Wants Freebies has continued to grow.

So, is blogging for you? Maybe.. ask yourself these questions:

  1. Am I able to write about what I love?
  2. Can I devote much of my time to it?
  3. Can I be patient (because the money and products don’t come easy)?

If you answered yes, then blogging might be for you. If so, WELCOME! :) Just know that it doesn’t come fast or easy, but it can be very enjoyable and maybe even keep food on the table :)
