I got the unique opportunity to try out Safeway Home Delivery myself. Since I had the twins I have been trying to walk to Safeway instead of drive (it’s a block away from me) because a: I want to get some exercise in – gotta lose that baby fat! And b: it is so difficult getting two infants into the car, out of the car, then figure out how to do the shopping juggling two babies. I usually end up using my big double stroller with reusable bags as my shopping bags. But my local Safeway is at the top of a hill, and my house is at the top of another hill, so getting 50 lbs of groceries home can be a trial.
Not to mention it’s summer. And we are having a HOT one here in Portland. It has been easily over 100 degrees in recent days. No way am I going out in that. So when Safeway approached me with the opportunity to shop at home and have it delivered, I jumped at the chance!
Safeway sent me 2 gift cards for $100 each (one for me, one for a reader!). I was so excited to try out online grocery shopping! I had my list of goodies I needed (heavy stuff like water, milk, cat litter!) and found them on the Safeway Home Delivery website very quickly. I noticed that the prices were pretty much what I had seen in the store – except there were some online only specials on some things I would have gotten anyway! My total was $87 – I saved $41 (32%!) off my original bill by shopping sale – and I got dinner items for 7 days plus those things that we need to periodically get (like cat litter) and basics like baby formula, breakfast items, canned soup, etc. I did use my credit card – Safeway currently doesn’t have the option to pay for groceries online with a gift card. However I do have that card for when I need to pop in to pick up some stuff.
One really nice thing I liked was to be able to compare pricing easy. Each item has a cost per unit right there, so you can see which product is the best deal. I had been overpaying for tortilla chips! You can also shop by sale! I also love that the site totals your purchase as you shop so you know how much you are spending before you check out. How many times have you done the math while shopping only to find you miscalculated?
I scheduled my grocery delivery for Tuesday between 1pm and 3pm. The delivery person knocked on my door around 1:15, had everything ready to bring in, and it literally took 2 minutes to finish up with her.
I LOVED using Safeway Home Delivery! The specials are fantastic, the delivery was perfect, I didn’t have to get out of my pj’s to shop! The only thing I missed was using coupons, however the online only specials made up for it. Plus I was able to use my loaded coupons from PGeSaver, CellFire, and ShortCuts AND my Safeway Club Card offers. So I was happy and confident that I got a great price.
